Director's Statement

How can you give a face to the story of an invisible narrator?
To explore this question, I asked Damilola Wiwoloku, a Palermitan with Nigerian roots, to tell me about his childhood and juxtapose it with the city's transformation.
The sound recording of his memories is the basis for the visual design of the film. Each scene has its own narrative form. The image often contrasts with the sound, creating a new level of perception.
A foray through Palermo provided ample opportunity to visually shape the narratives. I worked documentarily and often spontaneously found the right figures and places to complement Damilola's experiences.
We see Palermo and its inhabitants. Damilola, on the other hand, remains hidden from us. However, he is given a face through the places and characters that interpret his story. The city and its inhabitants are closely connected. Many of Damilola's experiences are connected to Palermo.
Through the interaction of image and sound, Damilola speaks for the city and the city for Damilola, whose experience is reflected in its inhabitants.
